“Do ALL things with a GREAT God”

As I reflected on Mother’s Teresa’s famous quote, I found myself staring at the words and pondering what they really meant. For I am a word-girl, meaning I often think I know what a word means, but I find myself looking up the meaning to ensure I am using it correctly and in the right context. So I found myself asking “What really is small”…….. “What is love”……..Before I knew it, I was dissecting the quote, and suddenly it all seemed so clear and simple.

Small things are subjective, I think we all know this. A smile, an opening of a door, doing the dishes: all seemingly small things that can make a rather large impact on someone without us even knowing. I think most of us extend these small gestures with great love- but what about the sm(all) things that aren’t so easy or gratifying? Like scrubbing a toilet, picking up a dirty sock, or forgiving someone who hurt you……..I for one, admittedly, do not always do these actions with great love, or with God on my mind. But as I write this, another Mother Teresa quote comes to mind: “Today, if we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other- that man, that woman, that child is my brother or my sister.” What a powerful statement. How the world may look different if all the small, big, and in between “things” were done remembering that we belong to one another, and that an abundance of peace comes when we do all things with great love, and with a Great God.

And as every Christian or Catholic Christian knows; GOD is LOVE, and in all the things we do, say, and speak, we accomplish his will when we do them with LOVE.

This reflection is short and sweet as we await the arrival of our third child any day! The last few days have brought some unexpected changes to our family life and birth plan- most likely by the time you publish this baby will be here and I will reflecting on all the small- yet profound- ways people helped us, and how unbeknownst to me, Gods plan was better than ours (as it always is!)

Hello! I’m Elizabeth OKeefe. My husband, Chase, and I live in a small town in northwest Wisconsin with our two daughters and brand new baby boy. My husband is a chiropractor and I have the privilege of staying home and caring for our family. I enjoy the outdoors, being with family, staying active, reading, and baking! Recently, I started Thrifting June, and online thrift business that promotes buying second-hand clothing and home items. Both Chase and I are life-long Catholics and we love living our faith through our work and family life. Thank you Michelle for sharing this opportunity to reflect on Mother Teresa’s quote of doing small things with great love!
