Two books I’m reading to my kids this summer

Ready or not, summer is approaching! My kids have their last day of school on June 1st. While I am looking forward to forgo the morning hustle during the week days, I’m nervous about what to do to fill up the time. My kids are all very close in age and, like most kids, tend to argue when bored.

I’ve been looking for activities to sign each child up for and trying to figure out a good routine for the mornings to practice some academic subjects so they’re not rusty for the fall. This, of course, includes books to keep handy to read to everyone.

Two books that we recently acquired are perfect for the summer, and also teach about our faith.

God made the Moonlight by Erin Broestl

God made the Moonlight by Erin Broestl is a great book for the younger ones (targeted for kids aged 3-5). Planning to travel this summer? This is the book to read. The story follows a young girl and her family traveling on an airplane to visit family out of town. Throughout her trip, she is constantly looking at the moon and watching it change as time passes by. But it always stays with her, and reminds her of her home, her adventures on her trip once she returns home, and that God loves her.

It is such a cute story with wonderful visuals. My kids have always pointed to the moon in the sky when we’re out and about, so they really enjoyed this story! This is the perfect book to bring along on your vacation to read to your child who might be a little nervous about going to a new place. Even if you’re not traveling this summer, this book is still a great read!

I Am Earth’s Keeper by Lisa M. Hendey

I Am Earth’s Keeper by Lisa M. Hendey is a great book for ages 3-8.* With beautiful illustrations, it immediately captures children’s attention. The prose is inspired by St. Francis of Assisi’s “The Canticle of Brother Sun and Sister Moon” and invites kids to take care of our Earth. Perfect to read before spending some time in nature this summer.

*This book, while targeted for ages 3-8, is probably better for the older side of that age range. The prose, while beautiful, went over the heads of my 3 and 5 year old, though they definitely enjoyed the pictures. It can definitely become a great conversation starter though! However, my 6 year old loved reading it and talking about the descriptive language used in it. It complements his science lessons in school this year, by reminding him that earth is a gift for us, and it is up to us to take care of it.

Be on the lookout

Be on the lookout for another post coming soon on books that I have been reading lately!

If you read these books, let me know how you like them, and also leave an amazon review! It really helps out the authors.
